About Me: Prof. Kripamoy Sarkar is a Professor in the Department of Applied Geology at the Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) Dhanbad. He has contributed significantly in the field of natural hazard investigations and soft computing applications in landslides. A few noteworthy contributions of Prof. Sarkar include improvements in rock mass characterization systems, and application of numerical modelling techniques to solve slope instability problems in the Indian Himalayas. His list of publications includes more than 100 scientific papers in various national and international journals and conference proceedings of repute. Most of his papers are cited by leading researchers in the area of natural hazards, engineering geology and rock mechanics. He has also published 1 book and 10 edited book chapters that reflect advanced studies on the assessment of the landslide hazards. Till date, he has guided 11 Ph.D. scholars, and 55 post-graduate students. Prof. Sarkar has been the principal investigator of 7 major projects on landslide vulnerability analysis and rockfall hazard assessment sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Department of Science and Technology, and IIT (ISM) Dhanbad in various parts of India. In recognition to his research contributions, Prof. Sarkar has been conferred with Best Paper Award at Indorock 2009 and 2014; Best Paper Award at the 4th Indian Landslide Congress, 2017 and award of the SERC Fast Track Grant for Young Scientists by DST in 2009. He is the recipient of the prestigious Inder Mohan Thapar Research Award (2021 & 2022) from IIT (ISM) Dhanbad. He is currently serving as an Associate Editor in the Journal of Earth System Science.
