About Me: ORCID ID: 0000-0003-0372-2642 Scopus AU-ID: 57196676322 Prof. Mrinal Kanti Mukherjee, presently a Full Professor in the Department of Applied Geology of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, is an acclaimed structural geologist whose research interests are focussed on working out the geometry, kinematics, dynamics and history of deformation structures in rocks at all scales and their applications in (a) deciphering evolution of deformed terrains, (b) mineral & hydrocarbon exploration and (c) geological engineering. His research experience in unravelling deformation scenario and tectonic evolution of complexly deformed terrains spans over 28 years. His publications attest to his extensive and exhaustive work on (1) the structural evolution of Nallamalai fold-fault belt of Cuddapah basin, (2) deformation of Pranhita-Godavari basin and Kaladgi basin, (3) deformation of Supracrustal rocks of Sausar Mobile belt in Central India, (4) Basement-Cover structural relationships of Western Bastar Craton and Western Dharwar craton (5) active faults in the West coast of Maharashtra. (6) Polymetallic Uranium mineralization in Rohil, Rajasthan and (7) Landslide studies in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand. His work on deformation scenario of the Paleo-Mesoproterozoic sedimentary cover of Kaladgi basin earned him the International Best Research Paper award in the 4th Annual International Conference on Geological and Earth Sciences (GEOS) in 2015 held at Singapore and B. P Radhakrishna Award in 2021 for the best Research paper published in the Journal of Geological Society of India 2019. Prof. Mrinal Kanti Mukherjee, has been conferred with the prestigious award of excellence in Earth Sciences by Mining, Geological and Metallurgical Institute of India (MGMI) in 2023, in recognition of his contribution to education, research, industry and society. In IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, Prof. Mukherjee is bestowed with the recognition of one of the most illustrious teacher in Applied Geology for several years based on the student’s feedback and comments. Before joining the Department of Applied Geology as a faculty, he had served in the Geological Survey of India at Central Region, Nagpur from 2002 to 2007. He has significantly contributed to industries and organizations like ONGC, DRDO, GSI, SAIL, Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd., Monnet Ispat & Energy Ltd., and SBI Capital Ltd. through consultancy services and professional training in geological mapping, exploration-targeting and geological engineering. He has supervised several post graduate and Ph.D dissertations and has earned a high reputation in teaching Applied Geology in IIT (ISM) Dhanbad for more than 18 years. Prof. Mukherjee had served as the Head of the Department of Applied Geology at IIT(ISM) from 2021 to 2024.
Research Interest: *Geometry, Kinematics and Dynamics of brittle and ductile deformation structures at all scales. *Engineering Geology: Applications of Structural Geology and rock mechanics in slope stability evaluation, safety and performance evaluation of Tunnels, underground and opencast mines and Dams, *Mine water solutions, artificial recharge and rainwater harvesting *Critical Minerals: Mineralization episodes, Structural controls on mineralization, drilling decisions, drill core logging and evaluation, Exploration targetting, AI and ML in Mineral exploration.
